Quebec: Nation Within Canada

House of Commons Passes Quebec Nation Motion

Forgive me my ignorance, but can someone tell me just what Quebec being called a nation is going to do?
It's all over the news, but I don't get it... what's the whole point of it all? Quebec is now officially 'a nation within a united Canada' - but what does this mean? How does it affect Quebec, and Canada?

It holds no legal binding but it's more of a 'symbolic' step towards recognition that Quebec is a distinct society.

The separatists (Bloc Quebecois) are going to later use this to push the idea that a distinct society needs a separate country. Meanwhile, none of the other parties have opposed this because that would lead to bad PR in Quebec and of course, no one wants that.

I personally don't agree with it because the aboriginals are also distinct and so are the Metis and so on. Where do you draw the line?

This motion was more of a stunt to win more votes in Quebec by appeasing them with something that seems like something of a victory. Come election time, you'll hear Harper campaign in Quebec celebrating the triumph of "nationhood" he granted Quebec, something that the Liberals did not grant them for 10 years. But I don't think anyone will be so easily fooled.

The opposition parties didn't speak out much against this motion, for fear of being labelled as "anti-Quebec". Right now, it's one of the least predictable voter grounds in preparation for the inevitable election.

Having lived in Quebec most of my life, the sovereignty thing drives me nuts, though it was dying over the last few years after the '95 referendum. This move, however, grants the separatists just enough fuel to rekindle their fire and try to exploit their newfound nationhood into a whole new campaign. It just makes me like Harper less, which I didn't think was possible.

Yeah, that's what I thought... seems totally stupid, really, 'cuz this will just fan the flames of separatism, and we reeeaaaallyyy don't need that debate all over again... it's annoying.
